Women of Japan (6) : Yuka

YUKA

YUKA

The one who plays the mukkuri

(In traditional Ainu clothes)

I wanted so much to find a model of Ainu origin. Yuka fell to me from heaven : she was conducting a mukkuri (Ainu Jew’s harp) workshop in Pole Town and immediately accepted to pose for me. After one hour of mukkuri, my whole arm ached so much that it was impossible to draw without shivering !

Ainu embroideries are the first thing I fell deeply in love with in Sapporo. A few of them are exhibited between the Odori subway stop and the station. Underground, amidst pale neons and low ceiling, in the noise of the shopping galleries and the flow of comuting people, they attracted me like a light in the shadows.
